Family Photos

The Family Photo Album consists of individual galleries. Each gallery is complete as to the number of photos it contains. However, 2 galleries, Reunion – Past Items and Family Photos are there for those who wish to add some of their clan’s pictures. Going forward, if there is a good response from family members who want additional photos added, I can always create more galleries, some specific to a family’s clan.

I want to give a special thank you to Cousin Clem who took most of the pictures that appear in the individual family reunion galleries, as well as to the countless number of young folks who helped out through the years taking photos.

There is an ongoing presentation at the family reunion centered on our ancestry. The slide presentation documents are available in separate galleries. The Ellington gallery is on a family that it appears we are related to, but I am still not a 100 percent sure.

This page contains links to all the galleries. Once you click on an individual gallery that gallery will be displayed in the standard photo album format (thumbnails), you can create a slideshow, or do individual selection (filmstrip) and you can select photos for downloading to your computer.

While you are at a gallery page you will have an option to switch to a listing of all the other galleries you don’t have to come back to this page.

The individual family reunion galleries will offer some background music to be played during slideshows, you can elect to play the music or not as well as controlling the volume.

(Some galleries have now been opened to the public; they are the ones that are underlined in blue highlight.  The rest are under construction, the galleries are there, but the photos have not been unloaded. Hope to complete soon.)

Note: In testing out the website to insure that all the features were working properly I noticed that the documents in the ancestry galleries are not suitable for viewing online. These documents require a higher resolution in order to view the fine print.  While you can see the documents online you will not be able to read the fine print. Also, due to the size of the image files creating a sideshow takes too long to load. I recommend that from the thumbnail view that you download and save these documents to your hard drive. Then using an image viewer increase the resolution from 100 to 200%. The image will be larger than your monitor and you will have to scroll around to see everything, but at least you will be able to read the fine print. (Anything higher than 200% distorts the writing into tiny pixels.)

Evelyn Sloan was our oldest living family member prior to her passing in Oct. 2011 at the age of 94. Evelyn's grandmother was Alice Wright-Sides, our great grandfather David Wright's sister. When David came to visit his sister Alice, who was babysitting Evelyn at the time, Evelyn got to know David. Evelyn was scheduled to do a presentation at the family reunion in Winston-Salem, but do to health reasons was not able to attend. The following are the recorded presentations she would have given at the reunion.

Note it is suggested that you right-click and save each file to disk. On playback you might need to lighten the background and increase the volume a little.

Presentation Part 1 (6:20 minutes): Highlights - Evelyn explains that when she was nine years old her Uncle David looked like a white man to her. That David had 3 sisters, Alice and Betty, that we know of and a third sister Fannie that we are not aware of and have no record about.

Presentation Part 2 (7:43 minutes): Highlights - Evelyn explains her own family tree starting with her Grandmother Alice (Sweet Momma as she was called) Wright who married Albert Sides and the names of their children. One daughter Hester Sides was Evelyn's mother.

Cemeteries - Research of death certificates, which go back to only 1909, indicate that a number of the family members were buried in two primary cemeteries. These two cemeteries were Odd Fellows Cemetery and Evergreen Cemetery located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Our great grandfather David Wright was buried in Odd Fellows, which was mostly destroyed to make way for a housing development. The remains of family members were moved we are not sure where they were relocated to as the cemetery records were destroyed in a fire.

Our great grandmother Sallie Wright is buried in Evergreen, within a special area surrounded by a number of other family members. With the passing of time some of our older members have been buried at Piedmont Memorial Gardens and Parklawn Memorial Gardens both also located in Winston-Salem.
